Define and apply a strategy for reading poetry by reading lines according to punctuation. Analyze symbols, couplets, and stanzas in poetry Read and comprehend the poem “The Secret Heart” by Robert P. Tristram Coffin
Symbols • Work with your cooperative learning group to brainstorm a symbol to represent each of the following words. Have answers ready in 5 minutes • Friendship • Education • United States of America • The same way you just picked a symbol to represent something, so do poets in poetry. • A symbol is an object, person, or idea that stands for something beyond itself. Poets will use symbols to make a point or reinforce its theme. • Example: The heart. The Bible refers to the heart as a source of emotions or beliefs, when in reality – it symbolizes our spiritual state.
Structure of Poetry, Punctuation, and Vocabulary • Two structures that are frequently used in poetry are couplets and stanzas. • A __________ is a pair of rhyming words. • A __________ is a group of lines that are meant to be read as a unit. • In “The Secret Heart,” each couplet forms a two-line stanza. His two hands were curved apart In the semblance of a heart. He wore, it seemed to his small son A bare heart on his hidden one. • Pay attention to punctuation – If there is not punctuation at the end of the first line continue reading until punctuation such as a comma or period. Notice the line is not complete until you read the second line of each couplet. • Kindled - v. stirred up or awakened • Semblance – n. Look or appearance • Read “The Secret Heart” which describes one man’s memory of a single vivid moment from his childhood.

Tristram Coffin • Across the years he could recall His father one way best of all. • In the stillest hour of night The boy awakened to a light. • Half in dreams, he saw his sire With his great hands full of fire. • The man had struck a match to see If his son slept peacefully. • He held his palms each side the spark His love had kindled in the dark. • His two hands were curved apart In the semblance of a heart. • He wore, it seemed to his small son, A bare heart on his hidden one, • A heart that gave out such a glow No son awake could bear to know. • It showed a look upon a face Too tender for the day to trace. • One instant, it lit all about, And then the secret heart went out. • But it shone long enough for one To know that hands held up the sun.
