But as he forged along, he saw to his great astonishment that all the lights were in one enormous building—a lofty structure with pointed towers plunging upward into the gloom. His eyes made out the shadowy outlines of a palatial château; it was set on a high bluff, and on three sides of it cliffs dived down to where the sea licked greedy lips in the shadows”. This part of the story is important because it describes one of the settings and what he is thinking about the castle. It makes you feel suspense because it has that creepy gloom look to it. The way the text tells you about the castle that he is seeing should make you feel weird because at the end of the text it says “ cliffs dive down to where the sea licked greedy lips in the shadows” and that would scare me.

3. “An apprehensive night crawled slowly by like a wounded snake, and sleep did not visit Rainsford, although the silence of a dead world was on the jungle. Toward morning, when a dingy gray was varnishing the sky, the cry of some startled bird focused Rainsford’s attention in that direction.” This part of the story is also important because it explains what he is doing in the forest and how the night went by pretty fast and then it explains that a startled bird awakens him and lets him know there is danger coming and then General comes through the bushes.
