  2. How is it constructed? • It is composed of the following parts: • Introduction • Task • Process • Evaluation • Conclusion • Teacher Page

  3. Introduction • Imagine you are a police officer who is investigating the disappearance of a swimmer on the beach in the Rockaways. You are walking along the beach while it is deserted. What do you see? Work in pairs and record your ideas.

  4. Task • Students will observe debris on the beach and the edge of the water. • Students will determine the need to formulate a project, the focal point of which will be to eliminate or reduce the collection of debris on the beach and maintaining cleanliness at all times. • Visit the community based organization to discuss ideas for accomplishing this task. • Present ideas persuasively.

Process • Step 1: Formulate a plan to visit the beach. • Step 2: Visit the beach during the early sessions of the morning. • Step 3: Observe the environment and record observations. • Step 4: Analyze data that was collected. • Step 5: Determine the problem • Step 6: Formulate solutions to the problem. • Step 7: Assignment to formulate presentation using various learning abilities- eg. Art, graphing, written reports, charting, mapping. • Step 7: Plan a meeting with the community based organization to discuss the problem and proposed solution.

Evaluation Students will be evaluated in the following areas: • Participation: following directions; completion of task within time allocated; cooperation of group members. • Written observations: Ideas collected during observation. • How applicable/useful/effective are the ideas to the task? • Conduct during the exercise. • Reporting.

  7. Conclusion • Students will share ideas that were collected during the observation. • Students will be encouraged to organize a clean-up session on the beach. • Students will also be encouraged to generate ideas for maintaining a clean beach e.g. Placing garbage bins at strategic points on the beach; creating notices to stimulate awareness of the need to maintain a clean beach and in so doing, save the ocean.
