AstroBowl Overview • AstroBowl is a competition developed by the Alabama Aerospace Teachers Association (AATA) patterned after the "Scholar's Bowl" in which teams of four students compete against one another to test their knowledge of aviation and spaceflight.  Teams will be quizzed by a moderator and will race against the opposing team to answer correctly.  Teams will compete in district competitions with district winners advancing to a state competition.  • Schools across Alabama will be enlisted to participate in this competition. Participating schools will form a team consisting of three student panelists, one alternate student and two teachers serving as team coordinators and advisors. • Competition will be divided into three grade divisions: Grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12, with the school teams competing in their respective divisions. • Astrobowl will physically be held at the National Space Science & Technology Center (NSSTC) and Lockheed Martin (LMC) in Huntsville, AL

AstroBowl Quiz Format • Teams • Teams compete in a double-elimination bracket style to determine the AstroBowl Champions.  Teams are placed into competition brackets to begin the competition with a second chance bracket available for losing teams. • Teams consist of three players plus one alternate • An adult sponsor of the team will be present with the team at all times during the competition • Teams will be registered during May 2008 to compete during Fall 2008 • Two teams will compete at a time with a moderator reading aerospace-based questions to the two teams. As each question is read, members on each team will attempt to answer the question by being the first to depress a button in front of them. The participant that "buzzes in" first will have five seconds to provide the correct answer. If the answer is correct as determined by a judging panel, the participant's team is awarded points. The first team scoring a set amount of points will be declared the winner. Participating schools will be supplied a comprehensive aerospace study manual from which all questions in the competition will be derived. • Study Material • Study material will be compiled and made available via the National Space Club AstroBowl website • Study material will cover categories such as: Aerospace History, Aerospace Science, Aerospace Technology Spin-offs & Current Events

  5. National Space Science & Technology Center and Lockheed Martin The initial Astrobowl events will be held at the NSSTC at 320 Sparkman Dr. starting at 8:00 am Wednesday 15 October. Park in the lower (East) parking lot and use that entrance to the NSSTC. Call David Smith at 426-2668 if you have questions. The final Astrobowl competition will be held in the main auditorium of the Lockheed Martin (LM) facility at 4800 Bradford Drive. Enter along the breezeway, through the Bldg 403 main door; auditorium will be immediately to your right. The LM facility is due north of the NSSTC, across Bradford drive. It’s a short walk along the west side of the NSSTC or parents, students, and teachers can move their cars and make use of the LM parking lot as needed.
