Just because we’re capable of reasoning, doesn’t mean we are reasonable. –Alexander Hamilton
It’s beliefs and emotions that drive most human behavior, not rational thinking.
The BIG ? Is it possible to teach ethicsto a dental student?
Children don’t have the neurological capacity for ethical reasoning. Limbic system makes decisions, not pre-frontal lobe. As we mature, we learn to keep the prefrontal cortex active, raising the activation of the limbic system. We can learn to activate the limbic system.
You can learn to keep prefrontal cortex activated, while suppressing the amygdalic part of the brain.
The strongest determinant of behavior is what we perceive to be the behavior of ourpeers.
Dentists who are ethical, believe their peers are doing the same. And dentists who are unethical, believe other dentists are doing the same.
