  1. Though we don’t like to, every good parent/grandparent must tell their children “no” from time to time, often for their own good – so that they stay safe, healthy, etc.

  2. “God’s ‘So That’ Principle” Learning to gain strength through losing.

  3. Men sometimes pray for strength... “Just in terms of allocation of time resources, religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning.” – Bill Gates, Interview with Time Magazine

  4. …but God sometimes makes us weak so that we might be strong! 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  5. Men sometimes pray for health so that they can do greater things… John 9:1-3 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

  6. …God sometimes gives us infirmity so that we can do better things. John 9:1-3 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

  7. Men sometimes pray for riches. Proverbs 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage. “If I just had ________ I’d be happy.”

  8. Men sometimes pray for riches. 1 Kings 3:7-13 "Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. 8 "And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 "Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?" 10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked… “If I just had ________ I’d be happy.”

  9. Men sometimes pray for riches. ...this thing. 11 Then God said to him: "Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 "behold, I have done according to your words; see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 "And I have also given you what you have not asked: both riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. “If I just had ________ I’d be happy.”

  10. Men sometimes pray for riches. Proverbs 23:5 Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. “If I just had ________ I’d be happy.”

  11. …God gives us wisdom so that we can be rich! Proverbs 23:5 Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. “If I just had ________ I’d be happy.”

  12. Some men pray for power. 1 Samuel 9:21 …Saul answered and said, "Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin?… 1 Samuel 15:17 …Samuel said [to Saul - MM], "When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the LORD anoint you king over Israel?

  13. Some men pray for power. Set up a monument to himself (1 Sam. 15:12) Offered a sacrifice to God he had no authority to do (1 Sam. 13:9, 13) Makes rash oaths (1 Sam. 14:24-46) Disobeys the Lord, sparing king Agag and the best of the spoils of war (1 Sam. 15:1-9) Saul was rejected as king (1 Sam. 15:26, 28)

  14. …God sometimes gives us weakness so that we can feel the need for God. 15:26, 28)

  15. God’s ‘so that’ Principle: God sometimes fails to give us what we want so that He can give us what we need. 1 Peter 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 1 Peter 1:21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. 16. God’s ‘so that’ Principle: God sometimes fails to give us what we want so that He can give us what we need. Philippians 1:12-13 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; Gaining ThroughLosing

  17. God’s ‘so that’ Principle: God sometimes fails to give us what we want so that He can give us what we need. Philippians 3:8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ Gaining ThroughLosing

  18. God’s ‘so that’ Principle: God sometimes fails to give us what we want so that He can give us what we need. 1 Thessalonians 1:6-7 And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so thatyou became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. 19. God’s ‘so that’ Principle: God sometimes fails to give us what we want so that He can give us what we need. Matthew 16:26 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. Gaining ThroughLosing

  20. What you might want is to live for yourself. What you need is to live for God!
