Standards Based Grading GOHS English Department Wide Grading Policy Back to School Night
Why Are We Different? • Traditional grading includes attendance, work habits, behavior, etc – inflates grades • Focus on aligning our curriculum with California State Standards – students progress • Pinpoints student’s strengths and weaknesses through frequent feedback, portfolio collection, and student reflection
How Does it Affect My Student? • Students may struggle as they learn new skills • Graded on improvement, not percentage
Example • Your child is introduced to a new concept • Assessment #1: Earns a 1 (does not meet mastery of skill) • Takes numerous assessments on same skill • Continues to improve on skill until she is consistently receiving 3’s • Your child’s score is likely to be a 3-(consistent understanding of the standard)
Student Scores are not “Averaged” • Students are not penalized for earlier attempts at standard • Practice work and class work = improvement • More chances to show an understanding of standard
What is not Included in Your Child’ Academic Grade • Bringing a book to class • Attendance • Behavior • These are not California English Language Arts Standards • These will be factored into Work Habits / Citizenship Grades
Extra Credit • Does not exist • However….. • Students may receive extra practice work from the teacher to help them improve • Students may be given extra assessments on standards
The Portfolio • Students log in their scores under each standard • Assignments may have multiple standards • Portfolio stays in classroom • Parents welcome to see portfolio to see student progress
