Chapter 6 The Earth
The Earth’s atmosphere has evolved over billions of years • First atmosphere: hydrogen and helium • Second atmosphere:98% carbon dioxide 2% water, ammonia, methane, and nitrogen • Current atmosphere:78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen
Ozone Layer • Ozone is O3 • Formed before early life could move from the oceans onto dry land • Protects the surface from hazardous UV radiation from the Sun
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) • Our Ozone is destroyed by these chemicals • They are very efficient at removing ozone • Ozone slowly replenishes itself as it is created from sunlight and lightning
The Earth’s magnetic field shield us from the stream of charged particles from the Sun called the solar wind
Earth’s interior consists of a rocky mantle and an iron rich core
Collision of two plates forms mountains separation Earth’s surface is composed of about 12 major plates which slowly move relative to one another
Plate tectonics is driven by convective currents in Earth’s mantle
Plate tectonics produced major changes to the Earth’s surface over the past 200 million years
