Learning Objectives • Content Objective: Students will be able to identify patterns of development essential to rhetoric and analyze the purpose and effectiveness of each pattern. • Language Objective: Students will read Pages 17-25 in The Language of Composition textbook and answer the questions in two-column note format so that the notes can be used to study for the unit test.
Key Vocabulary • Narration refers to telling a story or recounting a series of events. • Description is closely allied with narration because both include many specific details. However, unlike narration, description emphasizes the senses by painting a picture of how something looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels. It is often used to create mood and or atmosphere.
Key Vocabulary • Process Analysis explains how something works, how to do something, or how something was done. • Exemplification is a series of examples in the form of facts, specific cases, and instances. • Comparing and contrasting is when the authors is juxtaposing two things to highlight their similarities and differences.
Key Vocabulary • Classification and division helps readers sort and categorize new information into major categories. • Definitions lead to stronger thesis statements, more focused arguments, and ethos. • Cause and effect helps analyzes the causes that lead to specific events, thus causing a more effective foundation for rhetoric.
Homework Assignment • You need to finish the Pattern of Development Questions for homework tonight. • It is essential that you study these notes all the time. It will help you with your writing and the multiple choice portion of the AP exam. • Also, study them for the unit test!
