Technology and Social Space, a practical example from a Sociology module Dr Jon Bernardes; J.Bernardes@wlv.ac.uk Ms Emma Purnell; E.Purnell@wlv.ac.uk
Abstract level 4 Sociology module - 'Technology and Social Space' Run using Facebook as the primary technology for all module activity, student interaction and support. Focus on lessons learned from evaluation activities and student feedback.
WHY and HOW? • WHY • Facebook/Google Generation • Topic around Technology and Sociology • HOW • Friends Only mode • Invite all in • Module Resources • Weekly session • Portfolio assessment
Switch to Facebook Groups and allocation Making Resources available Weekly Portfolio work Wikibook - Sociology
Progress at week 3 Note students reservations but none refused or left (that we know of) Initial concerns addressed on module Sharing in Facebook and Twitter – good on Technology, less good on Sociology … Dropped Twitter
Some findings – week 9 • 100% positive/very positive about the experience of using Facebook • 46% students stated they would have contributed less to the discussions had it been in a forum • If studying the module again the technology students chose would be: 85% for Facebook and 15% for PebblePad – no student chose WOLF • Across an entire course 62% of students would like to see a combination of web 2.0 technologies such as Facebook and institutional technologies. Only 1 student felt that a course should only have institutional technologies.
General observations Increased patience threshold Less fear around technology generally Self selecting networks
A student’s first impression “Facebook wasn’t something I imagined doing at uni. I really enjoy sociology and it was a really interesting thought that we would be doing something different with technology. I like the way the Facebook aspect was set up that we set up new accounts and that the Facebook groups were closed that nobody else could come into the group apart from the people who were in the class”
Student perceived advantages of using Facebook “It was really helpful that everyone already knew what to do in Facebook. One of the students I worked with I was able to help. People still struggle 3 and 4 weeks into courses to know where forums blogs are sometimes. The familiarity was much easier and quicker in Facebook”
Future Plans – semester 2 Hoot.me App WIKI FB Questions and polling Socialisation – group work
Final Thoughts Facebook perfectly usable – will do most VLE tasks (sometimes with odd workarounds). Students much more familiar and all found Facebook easy to use We are repeating the module this year in semester 2
