  1. The Call to Action activities found here are a way to incorporate Upstream Arts in the classroom throughout the week.   2. An Upstream Arts friend is anyone who is in Upstream Arts classes. • Find a time of day to link to the activity and make it a routine part of your day. (the beginning of second hour, upon return from lunch, before releasing for the buses, before a math lesson, etc) • Using a visual timer for activities will help with pacing • Try using a scale from 1 to 5 for movement activities: 1 is the smallest, most subtle and 5 is the biggest, most obvious. • Useful questions for facilitating discussion: • How did this activity make you feel? • What did you notice? • What did it make you think of (situations, relationships, environments)?   3. Act Stretch your body in all directions, as far as you can. Try it for 3 minutes everyday. Try it when you feel bad. Look Spend some time looking out the window at people. How are the people moving? Can you tell how they are feeling? Day 1  Upstream Arts, 2011

  4. Listen Listen to a piece of instrumental music all the way through. Show or tell someone how it made you feel. What colors do you hear in the music? Act Try this every day this week: 1. Roll your head around in circles for 15 seconds. 2. Roll you shoulders around in circles for 15 seconds. 3. Do it with your wrists, hips and ankles. Day 2  Upstream Arts, 2011

  5. Communicate Practice telling someone how you feel in a slow and quiet way.Can you use just your body? Can you use just your words? Act 1. Tighten and hold ALL the muscles in your body for 15 seconds. 2. Then, release or relax ALL the muscles in your body. 3. Repeat 5 times. 4. Which way feels better? Day 3  Upstream Arts, 2011

  6. Communicate With an Upstream Arts Friend: 1. Greet your friend as quickly/loudly as you can. 2. Now greet your friend using only a whisper. 3. What was different about the two greetings? Act Take a deep breath with your arms wide open. Then, take a deep breath with your arms tightly crossed over your chest. What’s the difference? Day 4  Upstream Arts, 2011

  7. Act With an Upstream Arts friend, spend one day moving in a different way each time you move to a different room. How does it make you feel? 1. Move a lot slower than normal. 2. Take a different route. 3. Make eye contact with as many people as you can. Listen Try sitting quietly with your eyes closed and just listen. What do you hear that you usually don’t notice?   8. Communicate Find an object in the room. What is something that is the same color? What is something that is the same shape? Act With an Upstream Arts friend, spend 5 minutes mirroring each other’s facial expressions. Take turns leading. Day 6  Upstream Arts, 2011

  9. Act Do a job with someone else as your partner. How do you take turns and work together? Look Look at several paintings or photographs. Tell someone which one is your favorite and why. Tell them which one you don’t like and why. Day 7  Upstream Arts, 2011

  10. Look Quietly and carefully look at the pages in your favorite book. What picture is your favorite? Can you find something new that you’ve never seen before? Communicate With an Upstream Arts friend, practice making eye contact for 1 minute a day. Try it while you are right next to each other. Try it when you are across the room from each other. Try it with yourself in the mirror. Day 8  Upstream Arts, 2011

  11. Look/Communicate With an Upstream Arts friend, look at all the colors in the room. Tell your friend what color makes you feel good. What does this color make you think of? Act Swing your hands down and pretend to chop an imaginary piece of wood. Make a loud “Huh” sound as you pretend to hit the imaginary piece of wood. Do this 4 times. Try this when you are feeling bad. Day 9  Upstream Arts, 2011

  12. Communicate Tell an Upstream Arts friend one thing you ate for breakfast, lunch or snack. Was it hot or cold? Was it soft or crunchy? What color was it? Act 1. Shake your hands and arms for 30 seconds. 2. Shake your feet and legs for 30 seconds. 3. Shake your whole body for 30 seconds. 4. Relax and Repeat. Day 10  Upstream Arts, 2011

  13. Act/Communicate With an Upstream Arts friend, take turns acting like your favorite animal. From your friend’s actions, can you tell what animal they like most? What shape do you see in their body? Act Spend 5 minutes a day stretching your body in OPEN and UP shapes. How many different ways can you stretch that way?How does that make you feel?   14. Communicate Think of one thing you learned or practiced in Upstream Arts. Tell a friend, teacher or someone in your family. Have them try it. Last Day  Upstream Arts, 2011
