Dandelion (or whatever’s there) Study engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation
engagement • Go outside! This time look low (as well as high) • Make a three part data table for “biotic,” “abiotic,” and “unsure” • Gather information on “biotic” and “abiotoc” factors. Also record items where you’re not sure. • Collect other qualitative (descriptive) and quantitative (numerical) data on the environment • Make a class list of biotic, abiotic and unsure in class
exploration • Consider the types of data which can be collected on a 0.5m2 plot outside (biotic and abiotic) • Select and mark off a 0.5m2 plot of earth. Mark it well enough you won’t lose the boundaries and hope the mowers don’t mow • Do a vigorous observation of your plot. Collect data on organisms in your plot. Start on the surface, dig a little, too (think about your impact) • Attempt to define the ecosystem of or surrounding the plot of ground you’ve selected • Attempt to identify “FOOD” for all organisms
explanation • Compare data with other groups • Graph an abiotic to biotic relationship • Describe a population on the school grounds • Describe a community on the school grounds
evaluation • Create a food web on a word document which tracks the energy and matter through an ecosystem and upload to wiki • Be sure to answer the question “From where does all the plant biomass come?” (Hint, not dirt) • Explain: what path does energy enter and flow through the ecosystem of study? (be specific about nutrients and food) • Explain: what path does matter enter and flow through the ecosystem of study? (be specific about nutrients and food)
