Figure 2 Script followed by simulated pregnant patient MD: introduction Pregnant woman: introduces herself by name and says: “I’m so worried about my baby...” Questions below should only be asked if not mentioned spontaneously and preferably in this sequence. If necessary ask the neonatologist to clarify him/herselves: If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “What is the chance my baby will survive?” 2) If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “If my baby survives; what problems will he have?” a. If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “I’ve read on the Internet about brain-problems; can you tell me about that?” b. If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “I’ve also read about problems with the lungs / problems breathing. What can you tell me about that? c. If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “And what about feeding / when can I feed my baby?” d. If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “I’ve also read that those little baby’s have more infections. What about that?” 3) If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “When can I hold my baby?” 4) If not mentioned by MD spontaneously: “And when can we go home?” At the end of the scenario: Ask one of the following two questions 5a) If any choice is given / different options are given: “What would you advise me to do?” 5b) If no choice is given but a plan is discussed: “Is this the only possibility or do we have other choices?” At 30 min if not finished: Nurse comes in and say to the neonatologist: “I’m sorry for interrupting you, but you are needed in the NICU right away”
