Genetic Counseling Mrs. Hunter/Mrs. Kozuch Spring 2012
Introduction Genetic counselors are health professionals who work to help families understand genetic disorders by providing information and support to them. Families may receive information when they are expecting a child if a genetic disorder is probable or later throughout their childhood. Sometimes, even adults may find out they inherited a genetic disorder.
Task One of the ways of preparing families is to provide them with information on the genetic disorder, which discusses the symptoms, treatment, and outlook associated with the condition. Your job is that of a genetic counselor. You must prepare a brochure that families will receive to make them more aware of the genetic disorder. It must be very accurate and based on facts gathered from your research.
Process • You are to use a print source and the websites listed below to complete the “Genetic Research Guide” worksheet which will assist you in preparing your brochure. • Genetic Science Learning Center http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/disorders/whataregd/ • Genetics Home Reference http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/ • Genetic Disease Foundation http://www.knowyourgenes.org • March of Dimes http://www.marchofdimes.com • Your Genes, Your Health http://www.ygyh.org/ • National Human Genome Research Institute http://www.genome.gov/10001204 • CDC Genomics http://www.cdc.gov/genomics/
