Searching for External Funding: A Formula for Success—Four Orientation Questions to Ask Yourself • Four Questions to Ask Yourself • Why am I Writing this Proposal? • Is There a Funding Source that Matches My Purpose? • What Writing Style Should I Use for the Funding Source I’ve Identified? • What Information Might I Need to Include?
Why am I Writing This Proposal? • Some Examples of Reasons to Write: • To Start a New Program (Appendix A contains Resources on Early Care and Early Childhood Needs in Montana; and Appendix B contains Paraeducator Resources available in North Dakota and Arizona from the National Resource Center on Paraeducators) • To Provide Incentives to Recruit Students • To Support Students with Stipend Support • To Provide Release Time for Faculty—Particularly for Those in “One” Person Programs • Other Reasons?
Is There a Funding Source that Matches My Purpose? • Two Ways to Proceed: • Develop Your Idea and then “Shop” for a Funding Sponsor • Develop an Idea Based upon the Sponsor’s or Funding Agency’s Criteria
Is there a Funding Source that Matches my Purpose? • “Shop” for a Funding Sponsor---Some Sources Include: • Monarch—www.monarchcenter.org • The Federal Government—www.ed.gov/osers/osep • Your State Department of Education • National Resource Center on Paraeducators • Private Foundations • REMEMBER At this point Conceptualize and PREPARE YOUR ONE PAGE ABSTRACT—Begin to Explicate your Needs, Goals, Objectives and Project Services
Is there a Funding Source that Matches my Purpose? • Perhaps Adapt your Idea • In all cases Get to “Know” the Funding Agency
What Writing Style Should I Use for the Source I’ve Identified? • Carefully Review the Funding Sponsor’s Application Guidelines • Follow the Sponsor’s Format by Using the Sponsor’s Application Criteria as Topic Headings in your Application • Study How the Selection Process is Described • Determine Who will Read and Evaluate your Application—REMEMBER You Write with Reviewers in Mind!!
What Information Might I Need to Include? • Be Prepared to Demonstrate your NEED—It is Very Significant that you Establish This Early in the Process • Begin your Preparation of Resumes or Vitae • Think about an Organizational Chart, Project Timeline, etc. • Identify and Line up the Sources for your Letters of Support, Cooperation and Commitment • Think about a Possible Evaluation Plan • Begin to Think about your Advisory Committee, To Include Identifying its Purpose and Role • With All of the Above in Mind, Identify the Funding Source and Determine the Type of Project You will Develop!!!
