Goals • Manage CD-based images • Pre-stage a RIS client • Search for a RIS client • Set permissions to manage pre-staged computer accounts • Permit users to add computer accounts to a domain and an OU • Troubleshoot RIS problems
(Skill 1) Managing CD-based Images • CD-based images are used to install the basic operating system on RIS clients • To ensure that RIS functions properly, some steps may be needed • Adding CD-based images • Associating answer files with CD-based images • Adding a new image if the default image becomes corrupt (requires Server source files)
(Skill 1) Managing CD-based Images (2) • You use two wizards to add CD-based images and associate answer files • Add Wizard • Add Installation Image Wizard

(Skill 2) Pre-staging a RIS Client • Users are granted the right to join the domain and access network resources in the RIS environment • This presents a security hazard, which you can prevent by pre-staging the RIS client • Since computer accounts are created in the domain during pre-staging, there is no need to grant users the right to join computers to the domain
(Skill 2) Pre-staging a RIS Client (2) • Pre-staging tasks • Create computer accounts for RIS clients that use their GUIDs or UUIDs to identify them • Designate the RIS server(s) to the RIS client • Configure the RIS server for pre-staged computer(s)
(Skill 2) Figure 15-7 Using pre-staging in a multiple RIS server environment

(Skill 3) Searching for a RIS Client • Search function in Active Directory • Is integrated with RIS • Used to find out which RIS server is servicing a particular RIS client • Useful when there are multiple RIS servers
(Skill 3) Searching for a RIS Client (2) • Search results • Include the names of RIS clients and their GUIDs • GUIDs are displayed in wire format • Wire formats reorder the first 16 characters of the GUID • Wire formats are optimal for sending data over the network
(Skill 3) Figure 15-12 Searching for RIS clients serviced by the selected RIS server
(Skill 3) Figure 15-13 Viewing the names and GUIDs of RIS clients
(Skill 4) Setting Permissions to ManagePre-staged Computer Accounts • Overseeing RIS security • Is an important aspect of managing RIS • Involves granting appropriate permissions to users and groups
(Skill 4) Figure 15-14 Selecting the group to be assigned permissions
(Skill 4) Figure 15-15 Assigning rights to users for managing pre-staged computers
(Skill 5) Permitting Users to Add Computer Accounts to a Domain and an OU • If you do not pre-stage RIS clients, all RIS computer accounts are created in the same container during the RIS-based installation • To access network resources, these computers must be joined to the domain • Users must be granted the right to join these computers to the domain • Users must be granted permission to add computer objects to the appropriate OU
(Skill 5) Permitting Users to Add Computer Accounts to a Domain and an OU (2) • User rights and permissions • Grant users the right to join computers to the domain • Modify the User Rights Assignment in a Group Policy • Give users the Add computers to the domain right • Grant users permission to add computer objects to an OU • Assign users the Create All Child Objects permission for the OU in which the computer accounts are to be created
(Skill 5) Figure 15-16 Selecting the group
(Skill 5) Figure 15-17 Assigning the user right to add workstations to the domain

(Skill 5) Figure 15-19 Setting the Create All Child Objects permission
(Skill 6) Troubleshooting RIS Problems • RIS is an advanced service in Windows Server 2003 that enables you to easily perform remote installations • Like any other service, it may not work smoothly all of the time • For example, if the hardware requirements for the RIS clients are not met, RIS-based installations will not be able to start
(Skill 6) Troubleshooting RIS Problems (2) • RIS functions in combination with other services • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) • Active Directory • Domain Name System (DNS) • An incorrect setting related to any of these services can cause a RIS-based installation to fail
(Skill 6) Troubleshooting RIS Problems (3) • Causes of RIS problems • RIS client requirements • RIS and associated services • Security settings • Solutions differ depending on the cause
