  2. Description AT HOME ON THE WATER A house by the sea conjures magical notions of an oasis. At the mention of one, we imagine a place geared for relaxation and outdoor living, a place for wiling away afternoons with a book. At that dreamy beach house, there will be picnics and sea-glass collecting togetherness and bathing suits lemonade and seafood laughter and cocktails at sunset (or much earlier) and sand, sand everywhere. That’s what a house on the water means. SEA BATHING Along England's eastern shore, coastal resort communities catered to a growing clientele of wellness seekers who sought the sea’s treatment for a variety of conditions, including melancholy, gout, tubercular infections, leprosy, and hysteria. It was called “sea bathing back in the late 1700s, and by the turn of the next century, the practice of swimming in the ocean was mainstream for those seeking a cure for any type of ailment. Those so dedicated to the healing properties of time spent by the sea built their homes in coastal European enclaves. SITE SPECTACULAR South Dartmouth, Massachusetts From the street, this home is unassuming: a spare one-story facade topped with a flat roof and clad with cedar siding. Yet as you travel down the long driveway and approach the house, it’s evident that the residence, situated on a magnificent piece of land overlooking Buzzards Bay, is much more. SENSE OF PLACE Nantucket, Massachusetts The island’s original settlers took the Quakers' minimalist sensibilities to design. They used a very simple approach, building gabled boxes with very little trim and very little embellishment. With this project, the plan involved integrating an existing historic building with four new gabled structures. FAMILY HISTORY Galveston, Texas The city of Galveston, Texas, is recognized for a lot of things, including its iconic amusement park built on a pier that extends 1,130 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. Rich in character, Galveston’s historic districts are lined with Victorian buildings and other architectural marvels that pay homage to the city’s heyday as one of the nation’s busiest ports. MIDCENTURY MARVELOUS Darien, Connecticut Chuck Smith and his brothers grew up spending summers at Smith House, and while it wasn’t exactly geared for children, with its with stark white walls and a grid of glass overlooking the Long Island Sound, he appreciated the architectural marvel’s significance early on. “It was like living in a sculpture or piece of art.
