What is the difference between Puritans and Pilgrims? • "Pilgrims" wanted to achieve church reform even if it meant separating from their church and their nation. • While they continued to think of themselves as English, their emphasis was on their new political identity and spiritual identity. • Because of their passionate commitment to the necessity of reformation immediate and without compromise, they emphasized especially strongly individualrighteousness before God. What is the difference between Puritans and Pilgrims? • "Puritans" wanted to remain as part of the England, working for biblical reform from within. • As they moved to New England, they affirmed their "Englishness" and saw the main purpose of their new colony as being that of a biblical witness, a "city on a hill" which would set an example of biblical righteousness in church and state for Old England and the entire world to see. • They strongly emphasized the corporate righteousness of their entire community before God. A long time ago in a country called E______, there were a group of people who all went to the same church, they were called Puritans. Mr. Drez

There was a king of England (King James I) who thought everyone should attend his church. He got very upset when the pilgrims didn’t want to go to his church, he said, “If you refuse to go to my church, you will go to jail or even be killed!” Mr. Drez

The P_______ and others said, “Ok, we’ll go to jail.” Mr. Drez

Finally King J____ I realized that the Pilgrims and others weren’t going to change their minds so he said, “You can get out of jail, but you have to leave E_____.” So the pilgrims set sail for America in 1620 on a ship called the “M________.” Mr. Drez

The Mayflower set sail on Sept. 6, ____. The trip to America was long and hard. There were storms and the ship was really crowded. There were 102 Pilgrims on board. It was treacherous crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They faced storms, illness, horrible living conditions, and many instances of being ship-wrecked. Mr. Drez

In (year)_____ when they got to “Plymouth Rock” in America, it was a brutal cold winter and there were no food or houses. Many of the pilgrims died from sickness, starvation and freezing to death. Mr. Drez

A long time before Christopher Columbus, there were some people who lived in America already, they are the first real Americans. We called them I______. The Wampanoag Indians saw that the Pilgrims were suffering and so they decided to help them. Mr. Drez

Two Indians named Squanto and Samoset taught the Pilgrims how to hunt, fish, and make traps They were shown how to harvest corn and pumpkins. The Indians helped them build houses out of the trees and a community that will later be known as “Plymouth Colony.” Mr. Drez

Once winter came again, the Pilgrims were now prepared and now had food and a place to live. Mr. Drez

They were so happy, they agreed that they needed to have a feast and celebrate. They decided to invite their friends, the SPANISH. (Yes/No) Mr. Drez

So they had a great feast that lasted 3 days to whole week, they ate birds, fish, deer, sweet potatoes, corn, pumpkin and they played games. This would be known as the first Thanksgiving. Mr. Drez

But the first thing they did was to say a prayer of Thanksgiving to God for giving them friends, food, houses and a place to live where they could have the freedoms to practice their own religion. Mr. Drez

We still have Thanksgiving today. The Pilgrims story is one of survival, courage and hope. They can be considered the Pioneers of this country. Remember everything you have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Mr. Drez
