Towards EGEE-II • EGEE-II proposal: • Submitted to the EU on 8 September 2005 • Proposed start 1 April 2006 • Expanded consortium: > 90 partners in 32 countries (also non-European partners) + 27 countries throughrelated projects • Natural continuation of EGEEbuilding on our expertise and experience Dieter Kranzlmüller, Plans & Future
EGEE EGEE-II • Achievements by the end of EGEE: • Exceeding almost all final goals • Scope expanded beyond Europe • Transition from EGEE to EGEE-II • Two 2-year projects of a 4-year plan • Services continuously available • Adjustments and streamlining (e.g. SA3, TCG, …) • At the start of EGEE-II: • Full capacity from day one • Large-scale, production-quality infrastructure • Support for a wide range of applications • World class staff with extensive knowledge of Grid technology Dieter Kranzlmüller, Plans & Future
EGEE-II Mission • Increased multidisciplinary infrastructure • Manage and operate production Grid for ERA • Interoperate with e-Infrastructure projects around the globe • Contribute to Grid standardisation effort • Support applications from diverse communities • High Energy Physics, Biomedicine, Earth Sciences, Astrophysics, Computational Chemistry, Fusion, Geophysics, Finance, Multimedia, … • More involvement from industry • Reinforce links with an extended spectrum of interested industrial partners • Increased knowledge about the Grid • Through dissemination and training • Preparation of sustainable European Grid Infrastructure Dieter Kranzlmüller, Plans & Future
Sustainability: Beyond EGEE-II • Need to prepare for permanent Grid infrastructure • Maintain Europe’s leading position in global science Grids • Ensure a reliable and adaptive support for all sciences • Independent of project funding cycles • Modelled on success of GÉANT • Infrastructure managed centrally in collaboration with national bodies (in EGEE-II: JRUs) • Proposal: European Grid Organisation (EGO) Dieter Kranzlmüller, Plans & Future

Applications in EGEE-II • Ongoing support to 2 pilot areas (High Energy Physics, Biomedicine) with established user communities and large scale applications • On-going support to GILDA, the virtual grid laboratory • Increased support to 4 scientific disciplines (Astrophysics, Computational Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Fusion), 3 of them coming out of EGEE generic applications • Increased effort to foster a cohesive application community at NA4 management level • Increased complexity from the wider regional distribution (42 partners) and the associated projects Dieter Kranzlmüller, Plans & Future
