  1. Orkney • Orkney is in Scotland • Orkney is only 60 miles away from Shetland • Orkney and Shetland are similar except Orkney has more shops but less people.

  3. Facts and figures • There are 19,500 people in Orkney • 6000 of them are employed • Orkney is about 990 km 2 • Orkney is a bit smaller than Shetland • Orkney is famous for it’s history

  4. Festivals • There are two shows in Orkney the Dounby Show and the County Show • Da Ba is a game with two teams the uppies and the doonies. One team has to get the ball in the loch and the other team has to get it in a certain park in the country • Da Ba is held on Boxing Day and New Year

  5. sports • In Orkney they play sports such as squash, bowls and badminton • Every year there is an inter county between Orkney and Shetland • They play sports such as football, netball and hockey

  6. flag • The Orkney flag is the same as Shetland except it has different colours. The Orkney flag is red with a yellow back ground

  7. Famous places • The Ring o’ Brodgar is the best circle surviving from the Bronze Age • Skara Brae is a 4500 year old settlement • Maes Howe is a burial chamber. It’s main chamber is about 4.5 m2. It was found to contain only a peace of a human skull and some horse bones.

  8. weather • Orkney is warm but not too warm. • It is slightly warmer than Shetland. • There is less than 10 degree difference between the average summer and winter temperatures.

  9. Wildlife • The Scottish primrose is only found in Orkney and northern Scotland • Orkney has lots of birds such as the puffin, fulmar and the curlew

  10. food • Clapshott is tatties mixed with neeps and is an Orcadian recipe • There is Orkney cheese, fudge and ice cream • Just like Shetland, they produce smoked fish and lamb
