Europeans sent finished goods to Africa in exchange for slaves Africa sent slaves to the Americas to work on plantations (middle passage) Colonies used slaves to produce raw materials to send to Europe Europe would turn the raw materials into finished products to get more slaves repeat

Colombian Exchange • Transfer of peoples, plants, animals and disease from the old world to the new world • Peoples: • White culture replaces native culture • African slaves replace many natives • Plants: • From the old world the new world gained bananas, grapes, sugar cane, tobacco • From the new to the old we gain tomato, potato, corn

Columbian Cont. • Animals: • Pro: For some natives the introduction of the horse helped with hunting and weaker tribes overthrew stronger ones • Con: Grazing animals like pigs ate up their food since they did not fence their land • Disease: • Small pox spread incredibly fast among the Native Americans. It is estimated that around 98% of the natives were wiped out because of disease • This is the major cause for Europeans domination of the Americas
