Housing and Commuting Characteristics of Key Workers in Arlington:A Case Study of Virginia Hospital CenterPrepared for the 11th Annual Leckey ForumOctober 18, 2013 AHS thanks the Virginia Hospital Center for its support of this work. The research was conducted by Jeannette Chapman at the GMU Center for Regional Analysis.
Survey of VHC Employees • Online survey of employees, spring 2013, 678 respondents • Not necessarily representative of all VHC employees • Demonstrates the importance of affordable housing to employees at a major employer in Arlington • Suggests implications for the intersection of the availability of housing and labor force recruitment
Reasons for Not Living Closer To Work Note: Respondents could select more than one reason.
Observations • While not necessarily a representative survey, the data describe the housing and commuting situations of workers important to the Arlington community. • An important issue relates to the potential loss of younger workers and the challenges of replacing retiring workers. • We have no information on people who left VHC and their reasons for leaving. • This study could have wider applicability for other employers in the County. • A focus group of employers will be conducted as part of the Arlington County Housing Needs Study. • Additional research may be needed on the “break point”—where housing and commuting costs lead to changes in employment location.
