  5. In March of 2008, Kilpatrick was charged with Perjury and Obstruction of Justice. His trial date was set for September of 2008. • Between March and September, Kilpatrick also spent a night in jail for violating his bail agreement (by going to Windsor) and was also charged with assaulting a police officer. • In September Kilpatrick plead guilty to the charges and was given to weeks to help the city government transition before resigning. Ken Cockrel Jr., who had been City Council President, became mayor when Kilpatrick resigned, as is called for by the City Charter. • The City Charter calls for a special election to be held if a Mayor leaves office.
