Early History • Wiley along with a few other people coined up the first concepts of Grime but he has always been portrayed as the front man or “godfather” of the genre. • The mainstream initially regarded the new genre as “Eski” seeing as Wiley • He became an instant success with his long line of shows called “Eskimo Dance” • His best known franchise was a series of raves with Wiley as the headlining act amongst other performing artists.
Key Figures (Grime) • Dizzee Rascal, who was a Mercury prize winner as well as a protégé of Wiley made large accomplishments in the scene as well as the industry. • His record label, “Dirtee Stank” consisting of D Double E & Footsie was one of the first independent Grime record labels. • Another key figure, Kano won a MOBO in 2005 along with a “Best of British” award on New Year’s Eve. He also appeared as the first playable British character on the game “Def Jam: Icon” • A recent figure, Tinchy Stryder has stormed the scene with his idea of infusing Grime with Techno music placing him and Craig David at #3 in the charts.
Producers • Producers have a big impact on Grime music with the likes of Maniac, Nocturnal & Dot Rotten setting the levels for other small time producers to catch up. • Some artists also happen to produce as well as MC. This mainly because of the amount of professional producers available. • Most producers use sequencing software as well as virtual instruments in the 125-140 bpm range.
Audience & Fans • Most grime fans range in age between 10 and 19 years of age whereas Dubstep listeners would range from 16 above. • In terms of demographics, Grime has a predominantly black fan base with most coming from lower and middle class backgrounds. • Dubstep’s more techno orientated origins means that the majority of its fans would be from all classes seeing as techno has been around for much longer.
Sub Genres • Both genres are derived from “parent genres” or more original genres which have larger audiences e.g. Hip Hop and Techno.
Record Labels • Artists seem to be the front men of their record labels with most happening to sign other Grime artists onto their label. • Dubstep artists are rarely signed but still manage to release white label vinyl records once every few months. • Always Recording, Dirtee Stank, Eskibeat Recordings amongst many other labels are the main independent run record labels around. • Most happen to scout new talent on radio shows like Tim Westwood’s 1Xtra Hip Hop Show and Logan Sama’s Monday night slots on Kiss 100.
Competition • The other magazines covering the same genre is the RWD (rewind) magazine which discusses urban music and Grime in general with Dubstep slots showing up once in a while. • This magazine is sold at 25p where sold. They are also sold through phone credit and are released once every month. • They feature interviews, gig listings and competitions. • Other forms of media covering the genre areKiss 100 – Logan Sama1Xtra – Tim Westwood’s Hip Hop ShowChannel U – Streetz, Grime & Life
