  2. SSUSH13 At the turn of the century(1900), very few in the United States enjoyed wealth and prosperity. Many felt that government corruption is what caused much of this wealth for the few and demanded reform, or change. Those who pushed for these changes were known as Progressives. These progressives believed government regulation could make society better and actively attacked big business (L) Ida Tarbell (C) Upton Sinclair (R) Jane Addams

SSUSH13a: Explain uptonsinclair’sthe jungle and federal oversight of the meatpacking industry A Muckraker is a journalist or author who showed the “dirt” or “muck” on society, trying to force change One of the biggest changes due to Muckrakers is the change in the meatpacking industry in the United States following Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle The book uncovered the terribly unsafe and unsanitary conditions in meatpacking plants across the country As a result, we see the first food inspection agency started by the government (later named the FDA)
  4. SSUSH13D: explain idatarbell’s role as a muckraker Ida Tarbell had a very important role as a muckraker as she got revenge on John D. Rockefeller by exposing Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company as a monopoly, eventually causing it to break up Tarbell was upset that in the late 1800’s, Rockefeller worked out deals to put out smaller oil companies. Her father’s company being one of them Out of revenge, Tarbell wrote a damaging book in 1904 titled The History of the Standard Oil Company. In 1999, it was recognized as the #5 most influential literary work of the 20th century

SSUSH13b: Identify Jane Addams and hull house and describe the role of women in reform movements There were other reformers besides muckrakers in the Progressive Era, such as Jane Addams Addams, “the Mother of Social Work”, opened the Hull House in a poor neighborhood in Chicago. The purpose of this house is for poor immigrants and citizens to have a place to go for activities and as a place to live as opposed to the streets

SSUSH13b: Identify Jane Addams and hull house and describe the role of women in reform movements Other movements led by women: the passage of the 18th and 19th amendments 18th amendment banned alcohol production and consumption in the United States. Led by Carrie Nation with her ax in saloons 19th amendment continued on the Seneca Falls Convention in the 1800’s as women finally got the right to vote in 1920.
  7. c. Describe the rise of Jim Crow, Plessy v. Ferguson, and the emergence of the NAACP. Jim Crow: BEST known for his “Jim Crow Laws” These laws required the segregation of blacks and whites. What are some examples of places that blacks and whites had to have separate? Some other examples: “It shall be unlawful for a negro and white person to play together or in company with each other in any game of cards or dice, dominoes or checkers.” —Birmingham, Alabama, 1930 “It shall be unlawful for any white prisoner to be handcuffed or otherwise chained or tied to a negro prisoner.” —Arkansas, 1903 “No colored barber shall serve as a barber to white women or girls.” —Atlanta, Georgia, 1926 “Marriages are void when one party is a white person and the other is possessed of one-eighth or more negro, Japanese, or Chinese blood.” —Nebraska, 1911 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChWXyeUTKg8
  8. “Separate but equal” The Supreme Court Case Plessy v Ferguson was BEST known for the government declaring that as long as the same services and facilities were provided to both whites and blacks that separate was truly “equal.” Would the services that were given/ facilities that had to be used by the blacks be the same quality as the whites? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-ScixTs9wM
  9. NAACP “National Association for the Advancement of Colored People” W.E.B. DuBois- first black Ph.D. graduate from Harvard University. He believed that blacks must be politically, legally, and socially active in order to obtain true equality. The NAACP devotes itself to the progress of the African American community. Still activity today!

Describe the significance of progressive reforms such as the initiative, recall, and referendum; direct election of senators; reform of labor laws; and efforts to improve living conditions for the poor in cities Initiative- Allowed citizens of a state to force a vote on certain issues without having to wait for public officials to bring it up. Recall- Gave citizens the power to hold special elections to remove corrupt officials from office before their term was completed. Referendum- Public officials would be elected by popular vote, rather than by party or state legislatures.
  11. 17th Amendment Established that U.S. Senators would be elected directly by the people, rather than by state legislatures. LABOR LAWS: Most workers were having to work long hours in terrible conditions for low pay. With the long conditions workers were having to work from sun up to sun down so the risk of injury dramatically increases. Eventually reforms succeed in passing the minimum age law- which said you had to be of a certain age in order to work. Also, better working conditions along with less hours was finally established.
  12. Living conditions Jacob Riis was a key figure in changing the poor conditions of the housing market. He wrote a book entitled “ How the Other Half Lives” which exposed how immigrants worked and lived. Riis efforts were in large part to thank for New York passing its first laws aimed at improving urban tenements.
  13. f. Describe the conservation movement and the development of national parks and forests; include the role of Theodore Roosevelt. As president, Roosevelt created five national parks (doubling the previously existing number); signed the landmark Antiquities Act and used its special provisions to create 18 national monuments, including the Grand Canyon; set aside 51 federal bird sanctuaries, four national game refuges, and more than 100 million acres' worth of national forests. There are more National Park Service units dedicated to Roosevelt's life and memory than any other American, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the Badlands of North Dakota, where he shot his first buffalo and set up a ranch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLyJNwN1rOY
