Students will be able to: • Support all statements and claims with anecdotes, descriptions, facts and statistics, and specific examplesby following the formula that uses evidence in a paper. • Give credit for both quoted and paraphrased information in a bibliography by using a consistent and sanctioned format and methodology for citationsby looking at examples of citations.

  2. Incorporating Evidence in Your Writing How to use sources in your paper.

  3. What is evidence? Evidence consists of facts, expert opinions, quotable comments, clarifying examples, anecdotes, or illustrations that support your thesis statement. Aka supporting details Aka textual evidence

  4. Types of Evidence • 1) Facts • 2) Authoritative Opinions: Experts opinion may also serve as an authoritative opinion if it is supported by facts. • 3) Quotable Comments: notable quotes • 4) Anecdotes: humorous experiences that illustrate your point. • 5) Clarifying Examples: Examples that clarify your points and support your thesis statement make great evidence.

  5. How does it work? Follow this pattern: • State your claim. • Give your evidence, remembering to relate it to the claim. • Comment on the evidence to show how it supports the claim.

  6. Example Today, Americans are too self-centered. Even our families don't matter as much anymore as they once did. Other people and activities take precedence. In fact, the evidence shows that most American families no longer eat together, preferring instead to eat on the go while rushing to the next appointment (Gleick 148).Sit-down meals are a time to share and connect with others; however, that connection has become less valued, as families begin to prize individual activities over shared time, promoting self-centeredness over group identity.

Mice stowed away on the whaling boats jumped ship and have since multiplied to 700,000 or more on an island of about 25 square miles (Baldwin, 234).

  13. Your Turn! • 1st: You will be given a claim. • 2nd: You will choose one piece of evidence to write with this claim. • 3rd: You will write a comment that explains or summarizes your evidence. Make sure it relates a connection between the evidence and your claim.

(Fact) • 2) NBA expert and ESPN.com columnist Bill Simmons asserts Lebron James has no ceiling. (Authoritative Opinion) • 3)Cavalier fans spewed venomous insults toward Brazilian power forward Anderson Varajao for an ill advised shot at the end of game six. Lebron's defense of Varajao calmed the fanatics. (Anecdote) • 4)Lebron James rebounded the ball, dribbled from one end of the floor to another, and dunked over two players while being fouled by the third. (clarifying example)
