Which country was the first to start exploring by ocean? • The Portuguese were the first people to sail down the coast of Africa. • When they first sailed, they were in search of gold and spices. They also claimed African Islands as their own land.
Why didn’t the Europeans try to conquer the African Tribes? • The Europeans would have likely tried to take them over, but they found the African Tribes to be great in numbers and very good in combat. • Europeans also caught diseases in Africa that they were unfamiliar with. • Africans blocked off rivers with ships of their own.

Why would Africans sell their own people as slaves? • During this time period, warring African groups would take prisoners of war • These prisoners of war were seen as property and became slaves. • Africans sold their slaves to Europeans for goods. • This is essentially how the African slave trade began.
