  1. Do Now • Do you think your lifestyle is harming the Earth? • Think of what you eat, your mode of transportation, how much water do you use, how much garbage do you produce… • What are two ways you can improve your lifestyle to benefit the planet?

  2. Carrying Capacity & Ecological Footprints

  3. Carrying Capacity • The maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water, and other necessities available in the environment.

  4. Limiting Factors • Causes the population to decrease • Examples: • Food • Shelter • Water • Space

  5. Video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8dkWQVFAoA • Guided notes

  6. Ecological Footprint • The impact of a person, or community, on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.

  7. Who uses the most resources?! • Footprint analysis is useful for determining to what extent a nation uses more (or less) than is available within its borders – Who uses the most resources?

  8. Calculating our own Ecological Footprint • You will calculate how many Earths would be needed if every person on the planet lived the way you do… • Consider your actions and score yourself based on the action that fits you best. Scores are noted in (parentheses) next to each action.

  9. Calculating our own Ecological Footprint • Example: Water Use My Score: __50___ • My shower (or bath) on a typical day is: • No shower (0) • Short shower 3-4 times per week (25) • Short shower once a day (50) • Long shower once a day (70) • More than one shower per day (90)

  10. Continue this through Water Use • Once you have completed this for Water Use questions 1-5, add your scores up and record it in the grey box. • If there is a negative sign (-) next to a number, be sure to subtractthat number.

  11. Complete • Repeat this method for the rest of the survey • Finally, add the totals for each category in the grey box on page 2. • Divide your GRAND TOTAL by 300. • Calculators are in the blue bin on the counter • That is how many “Earths” you’d need if everyone was just like you!

  12. How do our results compare? • Whose lifestyle needs only one planet? • Whose needs more than 1? • 2? • 3? • 4? • 5?

  13. Online Footprint calculators • You can check your ecological footprint online as well. • www.myfootprint.org

  14. What can we do to help the planet? • Carbon offsets • Purchase carbon offsets and the money goes to providing renewable energy • Wind turbines • Hydroelectric power • Solar Power • Biofuel

  15. Exit Ticket • Name two ways you can decrease your carbon footprint.
