  1. ELECTRICAL ACCESSORIES CHAPTER 11

  2. WINDSHIELD WIPERS SYSTEMS OPERATION CHAPTER 11

  3. OBJECTIVES • Explain operation of 2 and 3 speed wiper motors, permanent magnet and electromagnetic field designs • Describe intermittent wipers • Explain depressed wipers • Explain washer pump systems

  4. TYPES OF WIPER SYSTEMS • STANDARD TWO & THREE SPEED SYSTEM • TWO OR THREE SPEED WITH INTERMITTENT OPERATION • BOTH CAN INCLUDE DEPRESSED FEATURE • INTERMITTENT WIPER SYSTEMS

  5. PERMANENT WIPER MOTORS • MOTORS USE PERMANENT MAGNET FIELDS • SPEED IS CONTROLLED BY BRUSH PLACEMENT • 3 BRUSHES, COMMON, LOW , HIGH FIG 11-12

  6. ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD MOTORS • SPEED CONTROLLED BY SHUNT FIELD • USUALLY GROUND TYPE SWITCH CONTROLLED • OFF POSITION 11-19

  7. LOW SPEED 2 SPEED SYSTEM

  8. HIGH SPEED2 SPEED SYSTEM

  9. PARKING2 SPEED SYSTEM 11-22

  10. 3 SPEED SYSTEMMEDIUM POSITION 11-25

  11. INTERMITTENT WIPERS • Power for wiper motor is supplied by module (capacitor) • Module uses low speed circuit • Motor uses park contact to make one sweep per activation FIG 11-29. CLASS MANUAL

  12. INTERMITTENT WIPERS

  13. DEPRESSED WIPER SYSTEM • CURRENT TRAVELS THROUGH WIPER/WASHER SWITCH TWICE. • DOUBLE PARK SWITCHES PROVIDE REVERSE CURRENT THROUGH IN PARK POSITION ALLOWING 15 DEGREES REVERSE MOTOR ROTATION. SEE C338 - 339

  14. DEPRESSED IN LOW SPEED

  15. DEPRESSED WHEN PARKING

  16. DEPRESSED OFF AFTER PARKING

  17. WASHER PUMPS • PUMPS CAN BE EXTERNAL OR INTERNAL TO WIPER MOTOR ASSY. • INTERMITTENT WIPERS HAVE TIMED WASHER 11-36 C341

  18. THE END OF WIPERS SYSTEMS
