James is a part of the General Epistles • James, 1-2 Peter, 1-3 John, Jude • Probably written from Jerusalem • Written to Christian Jews that had fled Jerusalem because of persecution (1:1; Acts 8:1 and 11:19) • James was written before 62 A.D., the year he was martyred • Some think it was written around 45 A.D. before James met Paul (Acts 15) • because of the supposed difference in the Paul’s doctrine of justification by faith alone with James’ doctrine of works • because the Jew/Gentile question is not dealt with in the letter Introduction
