  1. Welcome! 2012-2013 Volunteer Orientation I have been the recipient of love and service, therefore I can love and serve. There is great satisfaction in service to others, in seeing people and their conditions change.

  2. Agenda Welcome from Mrs. Thackston / Mrs. Clifford Nuts and bolts Opportunities for volunteering Work room Training Pictures for badges

  3. Nuts & Bolts Parking Eating Personal belongings Places to work Cell phones

  4. Sign In & Log Hours Sign in at the office Please wear your volunteer badge at all times in the building. Record your hours in the log book before you leave. These hours can help the school by: Identifying the school as exemplary to MD State Department of Education. Helping to meet criteria for family involvement when applying for grants.

  5. Volunteers Are A Valuable Part Of The School Individualize instruction Improve student achievement Improve students’ self-concept Build bridges between school and community Help teachers

  6. Attendance Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program. Please call the school so we can notify the teacher if you are unable to volunteer on your scheduled day.

  7. How Staff and Volunteers Communicate Teachers usually leave materials with written instructions in designated area so you can review them without interrupting instruction. Write a short note for the teacher to summarize what was done and add any questions before you go.

  8. Respecting Instructional Time When you come in to volunteer, this is not the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. If you need to meet with a teacher, please set up a different time that is convenient for both of you. Please respect the teacher’s planning time.

  9. Responsibilities Stay within the scope of the responsibility delegated to you by the SRES staff. You are responsible for the safety and care of children when working with them. Report any of the following to Mrs. Thackson or Mrs. Clifford: Sexual harassment or intimidation among students. Potential abuse or neglect situation of a student.

  10. Discipline Student discipline is the responsibility of the Spring Ridge staff. Tell the teacher immediately If you are working with a student or a small group and a problem comes up.

  11. Confidentiality What you see and hear at Spring Ridge stays Spring Ridge. Frederick County Public Schools regulations require all people working with students to respect their privacy. All volunteers need to complete the Confidentiality Agreement to keep on file in the front office.

  12. Liability Coverage You are part of the “Duty of Care” chain that transfers from parent  bus driver  principal  teacher  volunteer As a volunteer if you exercise good common sense you will generally be acting within an acceptable level of duty of care and therefore, be coved under the board of Education’s liability insurance.

  13. Personal Health Concerns Each volunteer must fill out an emergency contact form. All information will be held in confidence. Universal health protection

  14. Fire Drills Everyone must leave the building immediately and exit with the nearest class. No one can re-enter the building until administration gives the “all clear.”

  15. Lockdown In the event of a lockdown, everyone must remain within the building until the “all clear” has been given. We are responsible for everyone in the school during a lockdown and safety for all is a priority.

  16. EmergencyForms and Procedures Under section 6-107 of the MD Education Article, volunteers are considered agents of the local board of education for the limited purpose of comprehensive liability insurance and worker’s compensation coverage (while on school property). Volunteers must inform the school administration immediately of any accident, personal injury or injury to a student.

  17. Technology Regulation Each volunteer with network access must agree in writing to abide by Regulation 300-45–“Computers: Staff Use” and 400-73-“Computers: Digital Networks Acceptable Use.” This will be accomplished using the Request for FCPS Volunteer Network Account form. (Exhibit 1) Once completed and signed the form will be forwarded to the director of Technology Services for final approval to permit creation of the account. Technology Services will return an approved copy of the form to be kept by the school until the end of the current school year.

  18. Confidentiality Agreement As a volunteer, you will sometimes become aware of confidential student educational and medical information. This information includes, but is not limited to, grades, disciplinary action, medical accommodations, and the student’s home address.

  19. FCPS Confidentiality Regulation 400-20 Your role as volunteer requires you to comply to the county confidentiality regulation: “FCPS shall not permit access to or release of student records or personally identifiable information, except directory information, without the written consent of the parents or the eligible student.”
