Southern Africa:Regional Study • Each student will select a subject related to the region as a whole • Geography • Demography • Economic Cooperation • Regional Crises (something that affects the majority of the region) • Civil war • Famine • HIV/AIDS • For larger regions (West Africa) you will have to divide these equally)

  4. A Brief History of [country] • Provide a brief history of your country. It is not necessary to go back to prehistoric times unless you feel it is significant. • Use a timeline format with the event, i.e. • 1652 – Dutch trader Jan Van Riebeek established a way station at the Cape of Good Hope

  5. Pre-Colonial History • Provide a brief timeline of the history of your country prior to colonization. Be mindful of the fact that the current country name may not have existed prior to European occupation. An timeline of the region would be appropriate and include any ancient kingdoms or cultures that existed during this period.

  6. Colonial History • Provide an timeline of events that were shaped by European colonization of your country. Include any major political figures that were prominent in the struggle for freedom from colonial rule.

  7. Post-Independence History to Present • Provide a brief timeline of events that occurred from independence up to present day.

  8. Current Government/Leadership • Provide a brief explanation of the current form of government including who the current leaders are • Head of State • Prime Minister (if applicable) • How long has the current head of state been in power and when are elections going to be held next

  9. Geography • Briefly describe the geography of your country. Include natural and man-made borders, neighboring countries and any interesting features of the country.

  10. Cultural Highlight • Briefly describe a major ethnic group in your country. Include a background into their social institutions, religion, language, cuisine, relationship with the central government and how their culture has changed over time.

  11. Current Issues • Briefly describe the effect of one of the following issues on your country: famine, HIV/AIDS, the role of NGOs, sustainable development, political instability
