Mark 10:17-22 17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” 18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’” 20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.” 21Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.” 22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

  2. Mark 10:23-27 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” 27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

  4. Identifying your “ONE THING” God Knows Your Heart! Do You?

  5. Knowing Your Heart • God knows your heart and He will reveal your deepest secrets – Psa. 44:21; 139:1-12 (Eccl. 12:14; Rom. 2:16) • Does the idea of God searching out your heart terrify you? Why? – Psa. 139:23-24; Jer. 17:9-10 • While the heart can be deceitful and deceived, we generally know our own hearts in matters such as these – Prov. 14:10; Matt. 15:8-9 (Jas. 1:26; 1 John 3:20-21)

  6. ChallengingOur Rationales • Knowing our responsibility, are there things the Lord asks of us that we… • Rationalize our way around? – cf. Acts 5:1-4 • Go to great lengths to avoid facing the truth about? – cf. 1 John 1:8 • Do not do or will not do? – cf. Matt. 21:28-31 • Pawn off as somebody else’s problem, responsibility, talent or strength? – cf. 1 Pet. 4:10-11 • Constantly make excuses for ourselves regarding and excuse ourselves from? – cf. Luke 14:15-24

Three Hard QuestionsFor You To Ponder… • “What is that “ONE THING” that would cause me to walk away from my Lord sorrowfully?” • “What is that “ONE THING” that I am not trying to eliminate that Jesus would call me out about?” • “What is that “ONE THING” that will cause me to fail to take up my cross and follow Him?”

Luke 9:23-26 23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.”
