  4. Author • Matthew , whose original name was Levi • He was a publican or a tax collector- a position not popular with the Jews • (Mt. 10:3; Mk. 2:14; Lk. 6:15)

  5. To whom written Written primarily to Jews, then to all men everywhere “The book of Matthew was written by a Jew, to Jews” (Frank Dunn)

  6. Why it was written Matthew presents Jesus as the King of the Jews and the Messiah promised by the prophets “It was written for Jews primarily to prove Jesus was the Messiah, the promised one of God, by lineage, deeds, teaching, etc. “ (Ben Moseley)

  7. Outstanding features of the book • “…With its emphasis on fulfilled prophecy in the coming of the messiah, it is the perfect book to bridge the gap between the old and new testaments.” D. Conley
