  1. The Importance of Preaching 2 Timothy 4:1-8

  2. Saving Souls • Involves preaching • Could God have done it another way? Yes (John 6:44, 45) • Authorized preaching (Matthew 28:18-20)

  3. Work of The Apostles • Preaching • Publicly and privately (Acts 2:4; 18:24-28; 19:9; 20:7, 20) • Not limited to “preachers” (Acts 8:1)

  4. Urgency of Preaching (v. 1) • Paul “charged” Timothy • Compare to judge’s words to a jury • David’s words charge to Solomon (I Kings 2:1-10) • Our spiritual wellbeing depends on it

  5. Urgency of Preaching (v. 1) • A solemn charge • God is present when His Word is taught • Christ is going to return (2 Thessalonians 1:7) • Judgment will follow (Hebrews 9:27)

  6. Content of Preaching (v. 2) • The “Word” • Referred to as the Gospel, Truth, etc. (Mark 16;15, 16; John 8:32; 17:17) • Saved by the Gospel (Romans 1:16) • Philip preached Christ (Acts 8:5, 12)

  7. Content of Preaching (v. 2) • No room for other things • Worldly wisdom and human philosophy (1 Corinthians 1:18-25; Colossians 2:8) • Not to be perverted (Galatians 1:6-9; 2 Peter 3:16) • Not to preach self (1 Corinthians 4:6; 2 Corinthians 4:5) • Not to “Go along to get along!”

  8. Manner of Preaching (v. 2) • Preacher must be ready • Have the courage to say what needs to be said • Say it when it is popular and not popular

  9. Foy Wallace • There are always things that need to be said regardless of who likes it or does not like it, and there are always good people who will not like it because they lack discernment and do not sense the seriousness of the issues.

  10. Foy Wallace • Preachers need to be situated to say the things that ought to be said and still be able to eat; but whether they do or do not eat– they should say them.” (Torch, August 1950)

  11. Manner of Preaching (v. 2) • Meet the needs of the hearers • Reproving, correcting (Ephesians 5:11; Titus 1:9; 2:15) • Rebuking (Matthew 23; Acts 7) • Exhortation (Acts 2:40; Hebrews 3:13) • Done with patience and longsuffering (Galatians 5:22; 2 Peter 1:6; 3:9)

  12. Necessity of Preaching (vv. 3, 4) • Healthy teaching is vital • Bodies need wholesome food • Spirits need sound doctrine (Hebrews 5:11-14; 1 Peter 2:2) • Preachers dispense spiritual food, good or bad

  13. Necessity of Preaching (vv. 3, 4) • Some will not want to hear • Will not endure it (Matthew 13:15) • Some will pretend (Ezekiel 33:30-33) • Want their ears tickled (Isaiah 30:10; Jeremiah 5:30; 6:13) • Error is left when Truth is rejected (2 Thessalonians 2:101-2)

  14. Conclusion • Preachers must preach the Truth • Hearers must demand to the Truth
