Background • Initially formed in 1988 to advise the college regarding the type of program needed to develop “job ready” graduates in the social services and health to meet emerging needs within the community • 1988 Membership included directors and supervisors from: Children’s Aid Society, Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, Durham Board of Education, Pinewood Centre, Addiction Research Foundation and Durham Regional Police
Background • Re-initiated in 1994-95 with a mix of “front line” workers and supervisors from various community partners including those working in developmental services and children’s mental health • HSC diploma, had been developed and initially offered through Con Ed in 1990 (initial courses initiated in 1988), became a full time program in 1994-95) • Ongoing guidance and direction regarding the skills required for front line workers
Currently Grad Certificate. in Addictions and Mental Health Social Services Worker Diploma
Recent Years.. • Shift back in membership towards “Management”, i.e. Directors of Programs, Clinical Advisors etc. • Specific skills required by grads to meet agency needs and expectations • Current industry trends • Changes in labour market • Community connections fostered through the HSW-ADMH PAC contributed to development of CYW and DSW programs
Key Contributions • Examples… • Name change for Social Service Worker (formerly Human Services Worker) discussed and supported by PAC • Changes to Program of Study for both ADMH and SSW have been reviewed, discussed and supported by PAC, e.g. increased mental health content in ADMH • Active, “working” role, in ADMH program review that led to mental health curriculum • Revisions to field placement learning objectives (SSW) • Participation in SSW program Review (2008); provision of feedback through the stakeholders focus group
What is Working Well • Bi-annual meetings/follow up on actions • Program updates • Agency updates (new programming, emerging trends) • New business and action plans
What is Working Well • Examples… • “Would like more help and guidance with finding placements in the first semester field placement course” • “It would also be beneficial to have more instruction on the APA (American Psychiatric Association) report format” • “Would like to see an interview or short essay process to choose students for the program. Current students feel that there are too many students allowed into program that have no idea what the program is about and they do not care about being here”
Challenges: Current and Ongoing • Membership (recruitment of new members when vacancies arise) • Maintaining consistent student membership (graduation, re-location for workor otherwise) • Meeting schedule (day/time) to maximize attendance
