  3. UK Dairy Sector • UK is the 9th largest producer of milk in the world • UK’s largest agricultural sector • Dairy’s represents 9% of total food and drink manufacture turnover • 13.5 billion litres of milk produced a year • 15,000 farms, 1.8 million cows, 7,500 litres each

  5. Food and Water Consumption • Agriculture is responsible for 70% of water use globally

  6. Food and Water Consumption • In the EU over half our food related water footprint is due to consumption of animal products

  8. The Dairy Roadmap • The industry’s own sustainability initiative • Aims to reduce the environmental impacts of producing dairy products in the UK – including improvements in water efficiency

  9. Dairy Roadmap –Targets Producers: 2010: 15% uptake of water efficiency measures  2015: 70% uptake of water efficiency measures 2020: 90% uptake of water efficiency measures

  10. Dairy Roadmap –Targets Processors: 2010: Implementation of a sector environmental benchmarking programme  2015: 20% relative reduction in water use 2020: 30% reduction in water in water use

  11. Liquid Milk Sector – Water Reduction The liquid milk sector is able to show an 8% improvement in water efficiency between 2008 and 2011

  12. Action on Water Reduction • Dairy Companies incorporate Roadmap Targets into own company sustainability strategies • Encouragement of measurement and reporting of water use • Development of company water reduction plans • Federation House Commitment Partnership January 2013

  15. Dairy UK and FHC Partnership •Dairy UK and the FHC formed partnership in January 2013 • Partnership creates further transparency • Encourages dairy companies to sign up to FHC • Gives organisation access to expert consultancy advice • Encourages development of water reduction plans

  16. Dairy UK and FHC Partnership • 6 Dairy Companies • Total of 8.6 million m3 of water a year • 3 new signatories and 2.7 million m3 of water
