OBSERVATION VS. EVALUATION • There’s so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us that it hardly benefits any of us to talk about the rest of us”. • Move judgment to curiousity. • “Do not compare yourself with others for you will become vain and bitter for ALWAYS there will be greater or lesser persons than yourself.” • O.J. Harvey (University of Colorado) discovered a high correlation between the frequency of words that classify and judge people and incidences of violence in different cultures around the world; less violence in cultures where language focuses on human need.
THINKING VS. FEELING • Distinguish feelings from thoughts • Distinguish between what we feel and what we think we are ( “I feel like a failure”) • Distinguish between what we feel and how we think others are reacting to us (“I feel misunderstood”) • Avoid using thoughts as counterfeit emotional currency (e.g. “I feel like I want to leave the office”) • When you use the word feeling, follow it with a feeling word. • We are at our most vulnerable when we share what we feel with others.
