This European project focuses on nurturing empathy and responsibility in students towards animals. Through interdisciplinary work involving Humanities and Sciences, students examine the human-animal relationship, wildlife habitat, and livestock breeding. The project aims to raise awareness about animal protection as essential for a fair and humane society. Activities include presentations on national parks, wildlife reserves, and threatened species in Bulgaria, as well as visits to nature and animal protection centers. The project emphasizes the interconnectedness of human and animal welfare, encouraging students to actively contribute to animal well-being. Collaborative efforts with veterinarians, rangers, and wildlife habitats provide practical experiences for students to advocate for animal rights. By fostering empathy and responsibility, the project aims to instill values of compassion and respect towards all living beings.

Empathy and responsibility are indispensable elements in a fair and human society, both in our single countries and in the EU as a whole. Our project aims at promoting these values by working on the topic ‘animal protection’. We will investigate and compare the human-animal relationship in each of our cultures and, if necessary, try to contribute actively to a change for the better. For a better understanding of the above-mentioned relationship in our cultures we will consult philosophical and religious positions and testimonies from our national literatures; in addition to that we will survey and compare, to what extent our mother tongues not only reflect, but also create our perception of the fauna around us. We will focus on wild animals and wildlife habitat, considering animal protection as connected to environmental protection, as well as on domesticated animals. Here we will survey both animals for production - especially animals kept in factory farming in comparison to traditional farming and the ethical and environmental consequences - and pets, stray animals included, as we assume, that “you become responsible (…), for what you have tamed" (Saint-Exupéry, “The Little Prince”). Our interdisciplinary work will combine Humanities and Sciences in theory and practice. Our students will work in/and outside school, cooperating with vets, rangers, working at ornithological stations and animal shelters etc. Thus they will experience how welfare of man and animal is connected and how, by responsible activity in the field of animal protection, they themselves can contribute to life improvement in general. Quoting the Alsatian theologian, philosopher and physician Albert Schweitzer's words, our project aims to show that “animal protection is education to humanity.”
