Villa Soranzo short term residential program for patients with alcohol and/or cocaine dependence. Villa Soranzo started in 2000 thanks to the collaboration between a public health institution (ULSS13 Veneto) and a private-social organization (Ceis Don Milani). Villa Soranzo is located in Fort Rossarol, an ex military area, property of the town of Venice and managed by Ceis Don Milani.
Villa Soranzo: aims and tools • Diagnosis: Use of substance • Organic • Psychological/psychiatric • Social/family • Motivational • Motivation enhancement • Acquisition of tools: Emotional release and emotional regulation • Functional analysis • Relapse prevention • Self help facilitation • Identifying the aftercare process
We have called the core of the short term program “Acquisition of Tools”; this name underlines the fact that the aim of this program is not to heal, but to provide the patient with social and personal tools that allow him, once discharged, to face his own problems, his own relapse risk situations, his emotional frailty in order to keep himself sober. The short term program, in this sense, can be seen as a gym, where the patient trains in an artificial environment with a view of future challenges in real life

Villa Soranzo patients are sent by the Public Services (Sert) from all over Italy and they are sent back there at the end of the program. Villa Soranzo has to respond to the regional registration criteria of therapeutic centres type C (Psychotherapic ). Conclusions There is a growing interest for the short term residential programs in therapeutic community. Such programs are designed in particular for patients with alcohol or other substances problems Type 1 according to Cloninger’s typology: late onset, related to life events, where the substance has the function to reduce the psychic suffering. The main objective of the short term live-in program is the acquisition of tools in order to manage the use of substances and the correlated emotional situations.
Villa Soranzo is the first attempt to create a short term residential program in Veneto for patients with alcohol and cocaine problems. The follow up of patients discharged from Villa Soranzo confirms what has been reported in literature about the results of this kind of program. Perceived social support, self-effectiveness, craving and emotivity control significantly influence abstinence/relapse. Aftercare continuum is the main factor associated with abstinence maintenance.
Our experience confirms that such programs are effective and less expensive than hospital based or long stay therapeutic community for this kind of patients.
