  1. Citation Management Made Easy Citation management software eases task of collecting, managing and publishing bibliographies. Zotero covers new media (blogs, emails, YouTube, etc.) As with all citation managers, you must check the quality of imported citations… GIGO = garbage in, garbage out

To add a citation, select an item in your Zotero library, hold down the shift key, and drag the item into the document. To add a bibliography, select items your library and drag them into the document.

  22. Collaborate with Group Libraries Must log-in to Zotero.org with name and password. Add members, determine privacy, transfer ownership, determine editing rights, etc. To join a group, search for it at Zotero.org/groups or be invited by the group’s owner.

Link to URI (url or uniform resource name) Attach Stored Copy of file for reading when offline; can delete the original stored copy. Link to File saves Zotero server space but requires access to hard drive where file exists. In some databases (e.g. Google Scholar) you can drag and drop link to .pdf which will attach a stored copy.

  26. Issues/concerns • As with any citation manager, you need to review citations for accuracy.   28. Zotero Mobile Apps – ZotPad for annotating PDFs; Paper Machines plugin Zandy is well on its way to being the first full-featured mobile Zotero application for Androiddevices. Users can currently edit and view their Zotero libraries, add new items, and work offline. Future releases promise even more functionality. • Scanner for Zotero lets you add books to your Zotero library from anywhere, with no need to have Zotero installed anywhere. Simply scan a book’s ISBN barcode with your Android phone, and the software will add the book to your Zotero library directly on our servers. • BibUp allowsiPhoneusers to add books to their Zotero libraries much like Scanner for Zotero, and it also provides the additional functionality of photographing specific pages to be collected, on which BibUp will even perform OCR. • ZotFile Reader eases the transfer of Zotero-based PDFs to and from mobile readers like Androiddevices and the iPad. It builds on the success of the original ZotFile extension, which significantly enhances Zotero’s built-in PDF management by automating the attachment of PDFs to Zotero items, and the renaming of those files according to user-configurable rules.

  36. Using box.com for WebDAV If you have not used Box.com before, the act of logging in and authenticating creates an account for you.

  37. Under the drop down menu next to your name, select Account Settings Scroll to the bottom and select edit password in the create external password menu. Note: the new password must be at least 10 characters long and mixed uppercase and lowercase. It must also have at least 2 numbers and 1 symbol.  Open Zotero. Under the gear icon in the Zotero menu bar, choose preferences and then sync.  Enter your Zotero username and password in the Zotero Sync Server section.  Check the box next to Sync attachment files in my My Library using and change the selection to WebDAV Type dav.box.com/davinto the available space Fill in your Box.com username (the login you use to authenticate, + @berkeley.edu) and the external password you created. Click Verify Server button to check the connection.  If the message below appears, click Create. Click Verify Server again.  If the connection was established correctly, any file attachments downloaded with citation information into Zotero will be uploaded into a folder called Zotero in your Box.com account. These files are zipped and cannot be viewed in Box.com. But when you are at another computer and use these settings to sync your account and attachments, your files will be downloaded in an unzipped format.  For Sync to work properly, you must set up the Zotero Sync Server and File Syncing on each computer you use to collect citations using Zotero.

You can tell what version you have by going to Zotero’s help (?), under Troubleshooting information. If it says WOW64, you are running Zotero 32-bit. If it says WOW64; x64, you have the 64-bit version.
