  2. Tragedy In Dallas • Fall of 1963 JFK was losing popularity -Strong stance on Civil Rights • November 22, 1963 JFK went to Dallas to mend fences with the state’s democratic party.

Tragedy In Dallascontinued… • As they drove by the Texas Schoolbook Depository Building – Kennedy was shot in the head • The “window of the world” TV, kept America tuned in to what would happen next 1. Lee Harvey Oswald being arrested because of a fingerprint on the rifle. 2. Jack Ruby, a night club owner kills Oswald during the televised jail transfer

  4. Tragedy In Dallascontinued… 3. The funeral, as the country took the day off to mourn 4. LBJ being sworn in on Air Force One

  5. Warren Commission • Looked at all of the evidence to see if Oswald had acted alone • By 1979, the case reopened and it was stated that he was part of a conspiracy • Many theories = Anti-Castro Cubans, Communist sponsored attack, The CIA, Mob..etc. • Still a fascination because of missing facts, lack of evidence, the cover ups, & distrust of the government.

  6. The Great Society • LBJ focused his efforts on the problems of the decade. • His plan was termed the “Great Society” • 2- Main Issues ~ Ending Poverty ~ Racial Injustice

  7. POVERTY • LBJ put the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 into effect. ~ It created social programs to promote the health, education, and general welfare of the poor. • Job Corps Youth Training Program • Head Start- education for underprivileged preschoolers. • Community Action Program- poor people working on public-works projects

  8. Building the Great Society • LBJ focused his efforts on the following issues to change America: Healthcare: * Medicare- ~ health care for the elderly * Medicaid- ~ health care for the poor

  9. Building the Great Society Housing: Created better & affordable city living * HUD- ~ Department of Housing and Urban Development * Robert Weaver- ~ 1st African-American cabinet member: Sec. of HUD

  10. Building the Great Society Discrimination: * Civil Rights Act- 1964 ~ Outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, housing, & jobs. * Voting Rights Act- 1965 ~ ended the Literacy testing and the Government could monitor voter registration. * 24th Amendment- 1964 ~ abolished the poll tax

  11. Building the Great Society The Courts: * Miranda Rights 1966 ~ created the rights of the accused *Gideon v. Wainwrite 1963 ~ Public defenders for those who cannot pay

  12. Impact of the Great Society Reading activity: * Page 965-972 ~ Read about the impact that the Great Society and how it changed the American landscape. * Write out your own belief about what LBJ did for our country. * Explain what LBJ would have to deal with in the coming chapters.
