Universitisainsmalaysia, USM The School of HBP, USM Established as the second university in the country in 1969, UniversitiSains Malaysia (USM) was first known as UniversitiPulau Pinang. In 1971, USM moved from its temporary premises at the Malayan Teachers’ Training College, Bukit Gelugor to the present 416.6 hectare site at Minden, approximately 9.7 km from Georgetown. USM offers courses ranging from Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences to Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education. These are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 30,000 students at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in the island of Penang; 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in NibongTebal (approximately 50km from the main campus); and 3 at the Health Campus in KubangKerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus). As a Research Intensive University recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) in 2007, USM offers educational and research opportunities to students and staff. In 2008, USM also became the first university in the country to be selected by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status. Established in 1972 by the late Tan Sri Professor HamzahSendut, the Vice Chancellor of USM, the nation’s second oldest university, the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) is one of the few building construction-based educational centres in Malaysia that is multi-disciplinary in nature. The School was modeled along the lines of what Professor Koenigsberger and Markus had envisioned to meet the needs of a developing country. Programme layout This programme will take you in a time machine and travel through time dated back in the 17th century. The programme will kick off at the School of HBP in Penang. There will be series of lectures by HBP lectures such as history of architecture in Asia and South East Asia, Urban Design of South East Asian Countries, Restoration of Historical Building in Georgetown and architectural sketching & photography. Students will visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Georgetown and see the richness of straits architecture and the blend of Malaysian cultures. Next the students will take an interesting journey to Kuala Lumpur by KTM night train. In KL, students will be exposed to Malaysia’s famous buildings like the KLCC Twin Towers (visit the 88th floor) , Mesiniaga Tower and many more. Putrajaya is the administrative hub of Malaysia. There are many beautiful and interesting governmental buildings where students can visit including the Energy Commission building –sustainable building in Malaysia. Next spot is Malacca. Like Penang, Malacca has vast collection of straits building in Malaysia which is rich in colours and culture. Its one of the best place in Malaysia for photographers. PROGRAMME SYNOPSIS Known as Pearl of the Orient, George Town’s rich living heritage, culture and history was officially recognized when the World Heritage Committee in Quebec City, Canada, officially inscribed the city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. “… A unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.” - UNESCO Jointly listed with Melaka, George Town was acknowledged as having developed over 500 years of trading and cultural exchanges between East and West in the Straits of Malacca. It is the first port city, built by British in South East Asia. The influences of Asia and Europe have endowed the town with a specific multicultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible. Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from the end of the 18th century. The programme objectives are as follows: To expose foreign student to the uniqueness of Straits Architecture in Malaysia To educate students the history of architecture in Asia especially in South East Asian Region To educate factor affecting architecture like religion, culture, social and politic Through this programme, students will be exposed to unique architecture in Asia and at the same time they can enjoy the unique and diverse culture of Malaysia. There will be lots of exciting activities like street sketching and photography, restoration visit, homestayprogramme, student interaction, culture, delicious food, and interesting classes.
