  2. WATER • Identify where water is most at risk; • Consider using a set-aside strip or ELS buffer strip beside any watercourse; • Never fill near to a watercourse; • Ensure cleaning activities take place away from watercourses. Back

  3. SOIL • Plan cultivations and cropping to minimise risks of soil erosion; • Run tramlines across slopes to reduce risk of surface run-off; • Check soil condition before spraying; • Keep tyres as mud-free as possible; contaminated mud can carry pesticides out of the field. Back

  4. PESTICIDES • Choose products and packs that minimise risk of splashes and allow easy container cleaning; • Apply accurately; • Spray tank washings onto crop; • Wash outside of sprayer before leaving the field. Back

  5. ADVICE ADVICE • Take agronomist’s advice before spraying; • Use BASIS registered and BETA qualified advisers; • Choose right product and right dose; • Follow decision trees, where applicable. Back

  6. WEATHER • Check weather forecast for rain and wind speed; • Avoid conditions where spray drift can occur and use low drift nozzles where appropriate; • Delay pesticide applications until deep cracks in the soil have closed after rain; • Do not spray on waterlogged or frozen ground. Back

  7. THE LAW • Follow the label; • Do not overspray buffer zones and watercourses; • Ensure groundwater authorisation is in place if required; • Meet cross compliance requirements; • Comply with LERAPs. Back

  8. FARMYARD1 • Mix and fill carefully on an impermeable surface where drainage is collected and carefully managed; • Clear up all spills immediately, keep absorbent material close at h and. Never wash splashes or spills into drains; • Check sprayer is in good working order. Use the NSTS and operator checklist;

  9. FARMYARD2 • Fill using the induction bowl or closed transfer system; never leave sprayer unattended when filling; • Pressure or triple wash containers and drain into induction bowl; • Store empty containers safely and upright after use, prior to disposal; • Check for drips and leaks before leaving filling area.
