Matching Up With The I Offense • Favorite Offensive Plays • Favorite Defensive Plays
Favorite Offensive Plays • Run: • Inside Zone • Outside Zone / Sweep • Power • Counter Trey • Pass: • Play Action Flood • Play Action Layers • Wheel Combo • Bootleg
Favorite Offensive Plays Inside Zone E N E S M W B $ The Inside Zone is primarily used as a variation of the Iso play. This is best used when the offense utilizes heavily personnel formations, and has wide splits. The blocking scheme will use single blocks on the DL so blockers can get to the LBs as fast as possible. This creates creases in the defensive front, and provides multiple cutback lanes. The RB will follow the FB at the start of the play, but the RB has the option to follow the FB or cutback into an open lane.
Favorite Offensive Plays Outside Zone / Sweep E N E S M W B $ The Outside Zone & Sweep are very similar in how they are run, with the main difference in how the RB gets the ball. The basic blocking scheme is similar to the Inside Zone. With the ball going outside, cutback lanes are not of concern. Different formation alignments can be used to gain a numbers advantage. When running this play the offense will have to run behind the WR strength side to gain enough blockers.
Favorite Offensive Plays Power E N E S M W B $ The Power play is a play the I Offense will use when trying to take advantage of an uncovered TE. The crease blocking allows the OL angles to reach their blocks, and is a common play when trying to pound the ball on the ground. The Bandit is treated like a 40 front DE in the blocking scheme, so using the same reads will help in spilling the play. Keeping the ILB’s run fits straight downhill also allow the LBs to have an angle to beat the down blocks.
Favorite Offensive Plays Counter Trey E N E S M W B $ Counter Trey is a crease blocking play that tries to take advantage of the defense’s aggressive run flow. The same aspects of angles in the blocking scheme, and the straight ahead angles for the ILBs are applied here. A hard and aggressive spill by the Bandit will help in disrupting the counter trey. This is also a great backfield action for play action passes and bootlegs since it slows down the LBs in getting to their drops.
Favorite Offensive Plays Play Action Flood E N E S M W B $ C F C The Flood Route is a play that places the Strong Safety in a double bind of covering the deep out and the flat route. The play action look at him also slows his drop to the deep out, making this play difficult to defend if the Strong Safety’s reads are not practiced effectively.
Favorite Offensive Plays Play Action Layers E N E S M W B $ C C F The old NCAA Route or Layers Route is a play that uses the play action movement of the backfield to expose open areas in the ILB’s pass zones. The drag and dig are the primary routes, with the post route as a deep threat to keep the Free Safety from jumping the dig.
Favorite Offensive Plays Wheel Combo E N E S M W B $ C F C The Wheel Route is the single most route that puts the OLB/SS players in a bind. Their flat zone responsibilities make them responsible for running with any wheel route. When play action is used as well this double bind for this player is exposed even more. This route must be practiced extensively.
Favorite Offensive Plays Bootleg E N E S M W B $ C C F The Bootleg is a great offensive compliment when the defense is pursuing hard to the TE side run. This plays will create an opening in the coverage on the weak side, as well as slow down back side pursuit of the running game. The counter trey backfield action can also be used in setting up the bootleg.
Favorite Defensive Plays • Check the Slant to the WR Strength Side • Sam LB Blitz Combo • Will LB B Gap Blitz • Pinch Fire Zone Blitz • Twist Fire Zone Blitz • Bring 2 Off the Edge • OLB/SS Pressure • Inside Man Pressure
Favorite Defensive Plays Slant to the WR Strength Side WR Strength Side E N E S M W B $ C C F Because the offense must gain enough blockers to handle to 30 Stack front, there is a high tendency to run the ball behind the WR strength. By slanting the DL to this side is gets the defense moving in that direction and helps in attacking the play side, as well as speeding up backside pursuit.

Favorite Defensive Plays Sam LB Blitz Combo E N E S M W B $ C C F With a base Cover 3, the Sam LB can be used to disrupt the runs behind the TE. By using him as an outside and inside blitzer, this complicates the offense’s blocking schemes. The outside blitz can help in keeping the TE at the LOS, and the inside blitz creates an opening when the G blocks on Nose.
Favorite Defensive Plays Will LB B Gap Blitz E N E S M W B $ C C F Instead of blitzing to disrupt the point of attack, a blitz can be used to run a play down from behind. When the offense uses the weak side G to pull, this creates an open door for the Will to blitz through. Now he can run down the LOS and chase the runs behind the TE from behind. This is used with Cover 3
Favorite Defensive Plays Pinch Fire Zone Blitz E N E S M W B $ C C F A Fire Zone Blitz uses a 3 Deep, 3 Under match-up Cover 3. By pinching the DL and sending the Sam & Will, this helps spill the run plays to the OLB/SS. Also, the filling of the inside gaps help protect the Mike from blocks and allows him to fast flow to the play more effectively.
Favorite Defensive Plays Twist Fire Zone Blitz E N E S M W B $ C C F The Twist Blitz is a combination of two blitzes shown earlier. The Sam can get an open window when the G blocks down on the Nose, and the Will has an open window when the weak side G pulls for crease blocking plays. This is a good change up when the Pinch Blitz is used in tandem.
Favorite Defensive Plays Bring 2 Off the Edge S E N E B M W $ C C F Bringing 2 off the edge to stop the TE side crease blocking plays usually has both the Bandit and the Sam up at the LOS. The edge blitz takes away the crease and forces the ball back inside where the Mike & Will have open windows to shoot through. This is a good blitz to disrupt the point of attack.
Favorite Defensive Plays Bring 2 Off the Edge E N E W $ S M B C C F This is also a very good pass blitz when brought off the weak side. Any bootleg or sprint out attempt to that side will have 2 defenders in their face immediately. Both man and zone coverage can be used. Cover 0 and a Fire Zone 3 Deep, 3 Under are the 2 most common coverages used.
Favorite Defensive Plays OLB/SS Pressure E N E S M W B $ C C F When both OLB/SS are involved in blitzing, Cover 0 or Cover 1 are typically used behind it. The edge pressure with the wide rush of the DL allows the ILBs to have downhill run fits. This is most useful against crease blocking teams. This can also be a good blitz against the bootleg or sprint out.
Favorite Defensive Plays Inside Man Pressure E N E S M W B $ C C F Known by many coaches as a Zoo Blitz, sending all 3 ILBs is a great way to overload the inside of the pass protection. This is a Cover 0 Blitz, and it can be tagged to have the Mike and Will run a twist stunt in the blitz. This blitz is purely a pass blitz since it is vulnerable to the outside zone/sweep play.
