  1. Searching for a needle in ahaystack…

  2. First task… • Open google. • Within the search option type the words… advertising language • How many hits did you get? 4. Now type the following… “advertising language” 5. How many hits did you get? 6. Why do you think this happened?

  3. Advanced google • On the right hand side of the tool bar… this is where we can access the “deep” internet resources.

  4. AND/OR • AND can be used in between words to guide the search to include all words. Eg: language AND advertising AND cars • OR can be used to guide the search to cover alternative words. Eg: language OR words

  5. Parenthesis (brackets) • Used for more complex searches. You can add alternative terms for search • Eg: (language OR words) AND (advertising OR sales)

  6. Wildcard • Entering a question mark (when using google) in place of a letter will search for variations of a single character. • This is good to use when you are wanting a wider hit on words with the same root. • Eg: advert?

  7. Searching by subject… Google search options More Even more Google Directory Directory search

  8. Definitions • Eg: define: apple Try: Define: language Define: advertising

  9. Choosing a website that suits your purpose… • When you do a search, you can look at the address to determine if it will provide the information you might require: • Org. an organisation promoting an idea • .com or .co a business promoting a product • .edu an education site, usually presenting factual information. • Gov or govt a government site, usually representing factual information

  10. Choosing a search engine to suit your purpose… • http://www.quintura.com/ = graphic search engine that uses word maps to assist in refining searches. • http://clusty.com/ = clustered web results. Groups types of pages and materials together.
