Pilgrimages • pil·grim·age 1.a journey, esp. a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion: a pilgrimage to Lourdes. 2.any long journey, esp. one undertaken as a quest or for a votive purpose, as to pay homage: a pilgrimage to the grave of Shakespeare. • Spread over a wide spectrum of medieval society
The oldest and most famous pilgrimage centers were Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Jerusalem.
Slovenian lands had considerable importance as a transit area in the early crusades time for trips through the Balkans to Constantinople and beyond.
Hospici • Hospici were shelters for poor travellers and pilgrims • They were located along main transit routes • We can find hospici along all main roads to Adriatic ports or Italy at that time.
Another important route has led pilgrims from the east and northeast through the Slovenian territory to the ports of Trieste, Koper, Porec. On the main medieval transit route, which led from Štajerska through Kamnik laid hospic of St. Anthony which provided shelter for the pilgrims passing trough that area.
Pilgrims from the north, who instead going trough Channel valley choose to cross Karavanke mountain pass, Kranjska and then continue towards Gulf of Trieste, used Hospic St. Lenart under the Ljubelj in Carinthia side and Lajb in the Kranjska.
