  1. Bell Ringer #3 – 4/14/10 In paragraph form, explain the formation of the Black Panther Party under ideals of “black power” in the late 1960s.

  2. The Black Panther Party • Created in Oakland, CA in 1966 • Black nationalism ideology pushed young men to form the party dedicated to “liberation” of African-Americans and an end to police brutality and the capitalist system • Spread of the black power movement

  3. The Good • In Oakland & Chicago, the Panthers arranged free breakfast and health-care programs • Worked to instill racial pride, lectured, wrote about black history, launched education programs • Prisoners’ rights programs (more than ½ of U.S. prison inmates were Af-Am at the time)

  4. Tension • The Panthers alarmed America by taking up arms for self defense and patrolling their streets against police • The guns led to several bloody shoot-outs, especially in Oakland • During the 1960’s, 9 police officers were killed by Panthers, but dozens more Panthers were killed by police

  5. Chicago Police Raid • In 1969, Chicago police broke into Black Panther headquarters • Members had been drugged by an FBI informant and were in deep sleep • Two were shot by police, others were dragged to the street and beaten • The police & FBI were never investigated

  6. Partner Assignment • Select one “Point” from the Black Panther Party Platform and copy it onto a piece of paper • Explain in detail what the goal was for that Point in 1966. Then explain how (if at all) this goal has changed today. Has achievement been reached? Be prepared to present your observations to the class
