Health Promotion through Obesity Prevention across Europe An Introduction, aims and progress Johannes Brug, EMGO Institute, VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam and Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam Presentation available at: www.hopeproject.eu DOCUMENTS www.emgo.nl personal pages Johannes Brug presentations
Outline • Focus on Obesity Prevention – from epidemiology to evidence based policies • Linking to best available evidence on important predictors and determinants of obesity risk: motivation, abilities, opportunities • Objectives, goals and approach • Who we are • Time table • Program of this Geneva-meeting
Planned Promotion of Population Health Analysis of health and quality of life E v a l u a t i o n Analysis of risk factors Analysis of determinants of exposure to risk behaviours Intervention mapping: health education, environmental changes, policies Implementation and dissemination
Three important categories of determinants (Based on Rothshield, 1999; Van Trijp et al., 2006; Brug et al., 2006) • Motivation • Ability • Opportunity To know ≠ To be able to To want ≠ ≠ To be able to To want
The context of obesity prevention in HOPE • Both sides of energy balance • Micro and Macro environmental determinants: physical, socio-cultural, economical, political • Life course perspective reflected in three different age groups: infancy and early childhood, adolescence, ‘early’ adulthood
The main goals of HOPE • To improve the understanding of determinants and interventions for obesity prevention in key age groups across Europe in order to inform obesity prevention policy. • To explore evidence-informed scenarios for obesity prevention for Europe in order to inform policy makers about best practices • To build a network of networks of European stakeholders in obesity prevention research and research valorisation
The added value of HOPE • Systematic inventories and secondary analyses of existing scientific knowledge across Europe: • Obesogenic behaviours • Determinants of behaviours • Interventions including policies (action-oriented approach) • Different key phases in the life course • Specific focus on lower socio-economic status groups • True inclusion of central and eastern European member states • A strong focus on obesogenic environmental factors • A comprehensive network of colleagues and their projects across Europe • To build evidence-informed scenarios based on state-of-the art epidemiological modelling • To inform policy makers across Europe
