Science Camp September 2016 • It is our goal to provide 5th graders with a feeling of ownership in their learning. This hands-on approach is an experience that will last your child a lifetime! • Camp will be at Prescott Pines in Prescott, Arizona. September 28-30 • Students and adults are housed in dormitory style cabins.
Science Camp Details:It is our goal to have every 5th grader attend camp. • Eligibility • All 5th grade students are eligible. • Behavior • If behavior is a concern a parent may be required to chaperone their child while at camp.

More General Information • There will be a nurse or two on duty • Medication can be administered (must complete a form and have signed by doctor) • If you are going, you can administer medication to your own child.
Overview of a Day at Camp • 6-7am Wake-up/Showers • 7-8am Breakfast • 8-12pm 4 Class Sessions • 12-1pm Lunch • 1-5pm 4 Class Sessions • 5-6pm Dinner • 6:00-8:00pm Supervised activity (Parent Break) • 8:00-9:00pm Free time (supervised) • 9:00pm In cabins • 9:30pm Lights out!

Science Camp Costs • Total cost approximately $24,000.00 • $4500-Chartered buses to and from camp • $16000+-Camp • Meals for three days • Cabins-3 days and 2 nights • Extra Curricular Fun • Various Supplies Bridges Simple Machines Inquiry Materials Snacks and water
How do we pay for camp? • We are asking each family to contribute $200 in tax credit. • Science Camp ($150) • Junior Achievement BizTown ($30) • Halle Heart Center ($20) • If you are able to contribute more, this will allow us to offer a limited number of scholarships.

Chaperone Requirements • Must have fingerprints done • Tomorrow in the lounge from 2:00-3:30 • (we are trying to get RO here the first week of school) • Commit to the entire camp (Wed-Fri) • Help in a class (approx. 6 of 12) • Leader or helper • Attend a “Class” meeting • Cabin Parent 3-5 students • No sleeping in your car • No leaving your cabin at 10:00 at night to go looking for gold.

Levers: Students will apply their knowledge of the three types of levers by working in pairs to Levers: Students will apply their knowledge of the three types of levers by working in pairs to construct each type of lever using craft sticks and different-sized fulcrums (pencils/triangle blocks, etc.) Seatbelt Safety: This course is designed to inform students of the importance of wearing seat belts. Students will watch videos, engage in discussions, and test how different materials perform under great impact, like that of an automobile accident. This course is interesting, entertaining, and educational. Survival: Students will learn skills to help survive in the wilderness. Those skills will depend on what parents would like to teach but previous activities have included: Build a Fire, Make a Compass, Build a Shelter, Find Water, etc.
Wheel and Axle/Inclined Plane: Students will deepen their knowledge of everyday wheels and axles and inclined planes, then apply this knowledge of these simple machines to complete a hands on experiment involving inclined planes. Pulleys: Students will learn about fixed pulleys, movable pulleys, and compound pulleys in this “hands on” course. Students will even get the chance to lift one of their adult chaperones off the ground using a compound pulley with 6 ropes! Orienteering: Students will first learn the science behind how a compass works. They will then learn how to use and read a compass as they follow clues through the woods that will lead them from one marker to the next in search of a hidden treasure.
Wedges/Archery: Students will learn how wedges help us in our everyday lives. They will get to ‘play’ with some tools and experience how wedges can make work easier. They will also spend some time learning how to shoot an arrow as they discover that an arrow is also a wedge. Build a Bridge: Students will apply their knowledge of physics and problem-solving skills by working as a team to construct a bridge using straws, toothpicks, string, and paper clips. Screws/Zip Line: Students will deepen their knowledge of the different types of screws and functions of screws through hands on exploration. Students will then get all geared up to ride a zip line in the forest, and discover all the simple machines within a zip line.
Thermal Imaging: (5)* • Students will learn how fire fighters use Infrared Energy to rescue victims during a fire. • Ninja Warrior: (5) • Students will work together as a team to successfully complete a variety of obstacle course events. • Hot Lava/Bridges: (4) • Students will use teamwork and problem solving skills to figure out different puzzles in order to conquer a variety of challenges. Students' communication skills will be a key component in conveying ideas to each member of the group in order to be successful.
